StraboSpot: A Powerful Geologic Data Collection App
StraboSpot is an impressive application designed for geologists, geology students, and anyone else interested in collecting geologic data in the field. With a variety of base maps available, including maps, cross-sections, sketches, and images prepared by other users, StraboSpot allows users to collect geologic data and reference it to their location on Earth.
One of the standout features of StraboSpot is its use of a controlled vocabulary developed by the professional geologic community. This ensures that the data collected is consistent and can be effectively analyzed. The application utilizes nested spots for spatial grouping of data and tags for conceptual grouping, making it easy to organize and access the collected information.
While currently focusing on Structural Geology and Tectonics data, StraboSpot is expanding to include Petrology and Sedimentary Geology data as well. This makes it a versatile tool for various branches of geology.
Sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation, StraboSpot provides a transparent and open framework for field data. It allows researchers to store and retrieve data in a database that meets the reporting requirements of National Science Foundation grants. Additionally, StraboSpot uses a Neo4j graph database to ensure persistence and to establish complex relationships between observations and images.
StraboSpot can be used on mobile devices both online and offline. In offline mode, users can store Mapbox and Map Warper to access base maps for data collection. When an internet connection is available, users can upload their collected information and backup their data on their iPhone or iPad.
